Ripening Avocado

I LOVE avocados. I’ve been frustrated because you can really only get a “good one” for a few weeks a year it seems, even though the green ones are always available. I’ve never really had good luck with letting the green ones ripen. They always turn brown inside. I was seriously craving avocado, so I decided to give it another go. I didn’t have a paper bag, so I tried a new technique. I put two green avocados wrapped loosely in paper towel in a glass bowl with lid. The lid was on tight the first day, but after that I got a little concerned for some reason so I cracked it ever so slightly. I bought these on Monday, and when we had one Thursday (and another on Friday)….. perfect! I am in avocado heaven. I’m totally trying this again next week, and if it works again I am officially addicted. 🙂

**Update 2014: I’ve been doing this for a year now, and it has been awesome. I keep the lid on now for up to 4 days sometimes. I no longer use paper towel, and there haven’t been any issues. If the avocados are especially green I also put a banana in the container. The “gas” from the banana promotes ripening.
